THOUSANDS of bingo fans were eyes down with highlighters at the ready at Telethon’s Mega Bingo yesterday.
Held at the Perth Convention Centre, the popular event drew 5000 participants. With cash prizes and a new car up for grabs, the stakes were high.
One of the MCs for the day, Channel 7 personality Rick Ardon, said it was great to see people gathered to raise money for kids. “We had a sell-out crowd and could not fit more people in if we tried,’’ he said. “Last year we raised $90,000 at this event, and it looks like we are headed towards $100,000 this year. “People are so generous, and the people who come here just want to help Telethon.”
Bride-to-be and bingo fan Heather Martin, of Ellenbrook, celebrated her hen’s party at the event with her bridesmaids and mum. Dressed in a veil and sash the 33-year-old said she enjoyed playing bingo and the potential to win money was exciting. “At the moment we don’t know what the plans are for the evening, that all depends on how lucky we get,’’ she said. “So far I’ve won 50
cents but we’re having lots of fun.”
Great-grandmother Carol Tavo made the trip from Port Hedland to play with her friends from the Bingo Buddies Club. “It’s been such a lovely day out, I’ve really enjoyed myself and it’s great knowing we are helping the kids.”
Telethon general manager Mark McCrory said Mega Bingo was a great day out for all those who attended.
Ayleen Edwards walked away with the new Holden Trax thanks to Phoenix Holden, worth $24,000, and Natalie Reti pocketed the big $35,000 cash prize.
