Telethon Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre opens

JUL 2, 2015 The Minister for Health, Dr Kim Hames, today officially opened the Telethon Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre in Limosa Court (off Osborne Place), in Osborne Park.

Minister Hames officially declared the Family Centre open in a ceremony at 10am on site at the new facility which is already in operation. With money supplied by grants from Telethon and Lotterywest, the centre has been built over the past 18 months on land supplied as green title by the State Government.

Families with children who have type 1 diabetes will be able to utilise the Family Centre as a meeting point and for clinics. The centre will also provide education programs, along with camps away from home for families.

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not yet known, but we do know it has a strong family link and cannot be prevented. We also know that it has nothing to do with lifestyle, although maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important in helping to manage type 1 diabetes.

To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes depend on up to four insulin injections every day of their lives. They must test their blood glucose levels several times daily. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1. At this stage nothing can be done to prevent or cure type 1 diabetes.

The Family Centre was built by BGC and furnished by Ikea. Many other companies and suppliers have helped bring this dream alive. The Family Centre is the only one of its kind in Australia.

If you would like to visit the centre it is located at:

11 Limosa Court (off Osborne Place) in Osborne Park.

The centre will be open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.

You can call them during business hours on 08 9446 6446

Or you can visit them online here at www.telethontype1.org.au.

On Thursday July 2 The West Australian celebrated the opening with an 8 page wrap around of the paper.
